Revisiting a View
This week I visited Avebury Manor and painted the view over the garden wall. I might sharpen up the detail slightly and add some white flowers but nothing major; it will mostly stay looking as it is. I did a patchwork of pastel colours as an undercoating which I think helps the end painting look vibrant! Probably the bright weather helps too, bringing in inspirational colour and contrast. I've tried to keep some areas neutral.
I have often revisited a similar view but it is amazing how different the paintings are . A similar view but different weather, lighting and plants. You can see some below from last year (these earlier ones were done at home). My favourite is the latest one above; much looser and painterly and I've tried to get away from what looks like a classical composition.
I've generally been happier with my paintings since I started painting on location. It's always fresh and fast to catch it before the weather changes. It is easier to capture the feeling of what it is like to be there. I've started to get used to the practicalities of taking a palette of wet oils, and bringing home a wet painting without damaging it.
When I paint at home now, I'm bringing the skills learnt and colour combinations seen when out and about.
In terms of the wellbeing benefits of art, painting on location is a game changer. Surrounded by blossoming plants, the sound of birdsong fresh air, seeing the movement of nature at work. Even people to chat to which I rarely get in my studio!
